“We can think of ourselves not as teachers but as gardeners. A gardener does not grow flowers; he tries to give them what he thinks they need and they grow by themselves.”  John Holt

This week, we let learning unfold naturally as we...

Visited my mom
Watched a couple of episodes of Undercover Boss at Mimi's House
Worked on American Girl crafts
Read Hattie Big Sky, by Kirby Larson (A.)
and
Read My Life with the Chimpanzees, by Jane Goodall (M.)
(M. also got out every nonfiction book she could find about horses, and read through them one night in front of the fire...a lot of question asking and answering:)
Created Valentine crafts and cards
Worked on Pet Shop Math and a little advertising for their pet shops
watched Episodes of How It's Made on Netflix
Built with legos
Made crafts from boxes:)
Visited the library
Read from the History of Medicine (A.)
While M. re-read Pie (M.) to see which pies she needs to bake in order to finish her Pie project:)
Watched a little BrainPop and took a few of the quizzes
Tracked the winter weather headed for our friends in the northeast
Played lots of What's the Word? , one of our favorite new (and free) apps
Continued an interest in space
and decided to learn more about Australia and New Zealand after watching a friend's family vacation travels video:)
Helped a friend create a Civil War diorama and learned a little about Mississippi state history
Explored a new (and free) video app, Foto Slides
Packed and delivered Valentine treat bags to the Emergency Children's Shelter (some of our church family brought dinner for the houseparents and children at the shelter). We played games like Valentine Bingo with the kids and enjoyed getting to know them. Our hearts and prayers go out to these little ones, and we hope to continue volunteering with them. We are already making plans to go back in a couple of weeks:)

And we drew names to see who won a free paperback copy of Just Plain Nora!

The winners are:
Susan
Lisa B.
Karen
Jessica
and
Alicia

Yay! If you will email me your mailing address, I'll get your book in the mail to you:)

1. Baking with M.
2. A.'s Valentine cards for her friends
3. I leave the girls "mail" in their boxes every day from Feb. 1st to the 14th. It's our fun February tradition:)
4. Packing treat bags for the Children's Shelter. The amazing ladies at our church donated way more goodies than we could ever pack into our treat bags...we saved some for our next trip to the shelter!
5. Trying to complete my sentence-a-day journal!
6. Setting up the Civil War battle scene
1. The Mississippi Governor's Mansion made from a cardboard box
2. A.'s valentine mail box
3. Love these Valentine Mad Libs...the funniest way we know to work on parts of speech
4. M. cut her wrist when she fell while rollerblading, but she was brave and we all ended up with a lesson in safety and first aid.
5. M. serving dinner at the Children's Shelter
6. Two favorite books from the week:)  I remember reading every single Trixie Belden book when I was younger.  Hoping the girls enjoy them as much as I did:)

How was your week?
Linking up with friends today...hope you'll join us!

Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog - especially since I'm trying to transition to a more interest-led/natural learning approach with Miss 12. Just wanted to say that we are in New Zealand so if you have any questions Miss 12 and I would be happy to try and answer them. We'd also be delighted to send M and A some postcards from here if they would like.

I always love reading about your week...this calm and peace and tranquility seems to permeate these posts and makes me yearn even more to let go of some things and let learning unfold naturally..we are getting there.

I love that you made those gift bags for the Children's Shelter!

I look forward to reading your blog and what your girls are up to! I want to learn how to create such an atmosphere in our homeschool. It feels stifled and too much like school, no matter how I try. I think some of it is because I'm in my parents' house. My dad will tell my kids things like "school lasts for 6 hours. you need to be working for 6 hours." or "why are you talking and laughing and not working?" It makes things a bit challenging on my end. They mean well, but they are of a different generation and a different mindset. And I'm afraid if I said to my kids, "what do you want to do today" that I'll get a response like "play on our computers" or something like that, lol. I have much praying and thinking to do and of course, reading of your blog for inspiration! :-)

This looks like a wonderful, full-of-learning week!! You know I love reading about what you all are up to :) I am SO grateful that you are here, learning in the same sort of way we do, and sharing about it...sometimes it can be difficult to not feel like we should be doing more of something...even though I know in my heart that we are doing what we need to do. So, thank you for being an inspiration and support for me :)
I know I've already commented on a few of these photos on Instagram, but I just have to say again how much I love what you did with packing the treats for the shelter!!

The mansion came out great. You all did so many wonderful things this week. I know I say that every week. Making treat bags for the children's shelter sounds like so much fun too. What a blessing your kids are to others.
Blessings, Dawn

This looks like a great week! You just reminded me that I forgot to write my daughter a letter for her mailbox. Thank you! I like the idea of writing a letter every day until Valentine's Day. Do you put a treat in the box every day? Stop by our blog to see what we've been up to if you get a chance. I would love to hear from you.

I put a little "happy" in their boxes every day...a note, a card, a little treat, a piece of candy. It's something simple but meaningful each day:)

I always love to read your lists and I read them to Kei, it makes her strive a little more at times I think. :) I so love your Valentine tradition! Too sweet. Love the Civil War diorama! Awesome. Governor's Mansion!! WOW. What a great job. I used to LOVE Trixie Belden. Some of my favorite books when I was younger. I just want to let you know I so enjoy your girls Instagram photos.
